Personal Life
Sara Elizabeth Gamin was born on the 9th of September on 1987 in Detroit, Michigan, United States. She spent her childhood in Coral Springs, Florida. She is of Lebanese and German descent.
Gamin is a graduate of Archbishop McCarthy High School. She continued her higher studies by attending the Pennsylvania State University and graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism.
Professional Life
Ganim started her career in Journalism from the South Florida Sun-sentinel as a contributor and quickly became a writer for the Daily Collegian at Penn State. From 2007, she started working for the Centre Daily Times, where she produced her first lead for the story of child abuse allegations against former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky and went on to win several State Journalism awards.
In the January of 2011, Ganim joined The Partriot-News and later in March, The Patriot-News published Ganim’s article which led to the grand jury indicting Sandusky by November. This story was a major scandal for Penn State University.
For a job as a full-time correspondent at CNN, Ganim left The Patriot News after a year later in November of 2012. After her article about how the student-athletes at NCCA Division I member colleges and universities had to read at a third grade level or below was released, it shifted the attention towards different schools including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill connecting the UNC information to the findings of learning specialist Mary Willingham, who also worked at the university.
For her amazing work in the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse case, Ganim was termed as “the star reporter” by a MarketWatch journalism columnist Jon Friedman. Ganim received the Sidney Award for socially conscious journalism in the February of 2012, becoming the youngest person ever to receive the honor.
She also received the George Polk Award in Journalism for her works in 2011. Gamin was listed on “150 Women Who Shake the World” by Newsweek magazine. She received the Scripps Howard Award for Community Journalism with The Partriot-News.
Later in April, 2012, Ganim received the honor of Pulitzer Prize becoming the third-youngest person to receive it and won the Sigmna Delta Chi award for her UNC coverage in 2015. She received several awards including the Pennsylvania Bar Association Award for multimedia reporting and storytelling. The American Task force honored her with the Philip Habib Award in 2015 for Distinguished Public Service.
