Personal Life
Gold-Onwude was born on the 28th of April in 1987 in Queens, New York, United States of America as the daughter of a Nigerian father Austin Onwude and a Russian and Jewish mother Pat Gold.
She is a graduate of Stanford University with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications. Later Gold-Onwude went on to receive a Master’s degree in Sociology of Organizations, Business, and the Economy.
Athletic Career
During her high school days, at Archbishop Molloy High School in Briarwood, New York, Gold-Onwude played basketball and had managed to win two state titles in 2003 and 2004. Unfortunately, she had to quit the season because of a knee injury.
But the knee injury was not enough to stop Gold-Onwude to graduate from high school as one of the best players. She went on to achieve the milestone of becoming the first female athlete to play in the Division I basketball after accepting Stanford Unviersity’s scholarship offer.
She was so skilled in the game that she went on to be placed second on Molloy’s all-time leading scorer and all-time leader in steals and assists charts. And she was able to achieve despite her lingering knee injury. Gold-Onwude was honored by being placed in the GCHSAA Hall of Fame in 2011.
She was chosen to be the starting point guard on the 2005-2006 Stanford basketball team, under coach Tara VanDerveer. She had received another knee injury which compelled Gold-Onwude to stay on a red shirt for an entire season in 2006-2007. She made her return as the shooting guard on the next season. She was awarded the title of the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year in her final season.
Career in Journalism
Gold-Onwude had an amazing career as an athlete and her journey in the broadcasting field hasn’t been any less amazing. She began working for Tesla Motors after graduating from college.
She later decided to shift her attention and dedicate her time towards sports broadcasting. When the season is running she is invited to TNT, Pac-12 Network and MSG to deliver her analysis on the game and the season so far. And when the season is over, she works at the WNBA’s New York Liberty calling play-by-plays. Gold –Onwude was also hired by the Golden State Warriors and was assigned to the sideline reporting team.
She announced her departure from NBC Sports Bay Area on the 1st of September, 2017 and went on to take up a job at TNT and NBA TV.
