Fareed Zakaria: Birth, Education, Early life, Family
Fareed Rafiq Zakaria was born on the 20th of January, in Mumbai, India in 1964 as the son of Rafiq Zakaria and Fatima Zakaria, and raised as a Konkani Muslim.
Zakaria’s father was involved in politics and worked with the Indian National Congress, meanwhile, his mother, the second wife of his father, worked at Sunday Times of India as an editor. For his early education, he was sent to study at the Cathedral and John Connon School at Mumbai.
After graduating from high school, he pursued his under graduate studies at Yale University and graduated by earning a Bachelor in Arts degree in 1986. While he was at Yale, Zakaria worked at Yale Political Monthly as the editor chief and served at Yale Political Union as the president. He continued his education by attending Harvard University and received a degree of doctor of philosophy in Government in 1993.
Zakaria married Paula Throckmorton Zakaria, a jewelry designer and the happy couple has been blessed with three beautiful children – two daughters Lila and Sofia and a son Omar. He lives with his family in New York City.
Fareed Zakaria: Professional Life and Career
Zakaria had already taken the first steps into his career while he was studying at Harvard where he worked as the director of a project related to American Foreign Policy. After graduation, he joined Foreign Affairs and after years of hard work, he rose up to the position of the managing editor in 1992. He changed the magazine’s design and shifted to a bimonthly from a quarterly publication schedule. He was hired at Columbia University to work as an adjunct professor.
Zakaria went on to receive the position of editor at Newsweek International in the October of 2000, later joining Time to handle the responsibility of the editor at-large in the August of 2010.
Zakaria has contributed various written works for recognized magazines including The New Yorker, The New York Times, The New Republic, and The Wall Street Journal. He has written several books which include From Wealth to Power: The Unusual Origins of America's World Role (Princeton, 1998), The Future of Freedom(Norton, 2003), The Post-American World (2008), and In Defense of a Liberal Education (Norton, 2015). Zakaria was also involved in The American Encounter: The United States and the Making of the Modern World as the co-editor along with James F. Hoge Jr. He is an accomplished author who has written several New York Times bestsellers.
Zakaria has also worked on the show This Week with George Stephanopoulos on ABC as the show’s news analyst and has had the opportunity to host the PBS show Foreign Exchange with Fareed Zakaria. In the June of 2008, Zakaria’s own show Fareed Zakaria GPS aired for the first time on CNN.
In his career, in the time that Zakaria dedicated to journalism, he has achieved several praiseworthy feats. His service has led him to be a five time nominee for the National Magazine Award, and among his five nominations, he has even taken the award home one time. His show was awarded the Peabody Award and is a several time nominee for the Emmy Award. Zakaria has been named as the India Abroad Person of the Year in 2008. Aside from this, he has been honored by the Indian government with the prestigious Padma Bhusan award as well.
