Carol Jean Vorderman, born on the 24th of December on 1960 in Bedford, Bedfordshire, is the youngest among 3 children of Dutch father Anton ‘Tony’ Vorderman and Welsh mother Edwina Jean.
Vorderman’s parents decided to separate when she was just 3 weeks old after which she moved back to her home town Prestatyn, North Wales with her mother and siblings, Anton and Trixie. She only met her father 42 years later.
Vorderman went to a Roman Catholic comprehensive Blessed Edward Jones High School in Rhyl. She started studing engineering at Sidney Sussex College at Cambridge when she was 17 years old. Being awarded a Third class in all three years, she qualified to become a member of the “Nines Club”, later graduating with a third-class honors degree.
When Vorderman started to explore her Dutch heritage in 2007, she discovered that her father had played an active role in the Dutch resistance during the Nazi occupation and her grandfather, Adolphe Vorderman was actively involved in the discovery of Vitamins.
Professional Life
Vorderman started her career at Dinorwig Power Station as a junior civil engineer, becoming a graduate management trainee in Leeds. On the sidelines, she was also a backing singer to Lindsay Forrest in the Leeds-based pop group Dawn Chorus and the Blue Tits during early 1980s. She started making appearances on Peter Levy’s show Radio Aire, as story reader for pre-school children.
After submitting an application to a quiz show, Countdown, Vorderman was hired and started appearing on the show from 1982, when she was 21, to 2008. She was good at mathematics and contributed to the calculations on the show.
Her involvement slowly increased over the years eventually becoming the show hostess, due to her intellectual ability to perform arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately. She went on to become one of the highest paid women in Britain as she kept on progressing further.
In the June of 2005, Vorderman refused to fill in the role of Richard Whiteley, who had recently deceased, as the main presenter of the show due to which the show had to go on a four month hiatus. After the spot was filled on by Des Lynam, the show continued and Vorderman remained the co-host. Vorderman, after an admirable 26 years of loyalty, left the show in December of 2008.
She presented a show for the first time on 5th September as she and Sally Lindsay replaced Kate Thornton and Zoe Tyler from Loose Women. Later on 14 July, 2014, she departed from the show Loose Women as its presenter.
Over the years she has presented and hosted many events and shows including the annual Pride of Britain Awards, televised by ITV, Have I Got News for You, and The Sunday Night Project, and even competed in the second series of Strictly Come Dancing, partnering with Paul Killick.
