Personal Life
Orla Guerin was born in Dublin, Ireland on 15th May, 1966. For her education, she attended a convent school. She went on to study at the Dublin Institute of Technology and graduated with a degree in Journalism.
At the College of Commerce in Dublin, Guerin was provided with a Certificate of Journalism in 1987. Later she attended the University College Dublin and graduated with a Master’s degree in Film Studies.
In 2003, Guerin married fellow correspondent Michael Georgy.
Professional Life
Guerin started her career in Journalism through newspapers like Sunday Tribune in Dublin. In 1987 she began working for RTE News becoming its youngest foreign correspondent in 1990. She worked for RTE until 1994. During this period she reported from central Europe – former Soviet Union, Yugoslavia and Sarajevo.
Because of her brilliant work at RTE Radio, she received a Jacob’s Award in 1992. In the 1994 European Parliaments elections, Guerin ran as an Irish Labour Party candidate. Although she had polled seventh of 15 candidates with 6% of the vote, she failed to win a seat.
In 1995, Guerin was hired by BBC and was assigned the role of correspondent at Southern Europe in July 1996 followed by Rome until June 2000. She had to report from Kosovo, the Republic of Macedonia and the Basque Country in northern Spain. After Rome, Guerin was based in Moscow, where she covered the Kursk submarine disaster in 2000.
BBC appointed Guerin to Jerusalem in 2001 and after some Israeli soldiers fired in the direction of Guerin and her team, BBC filed an official complaint to the Israeli government in the April of 2002. Two years later the Israeli government accused Guerin of a “deep-seated bias against Israel. Her role as a correspondent in Jerusalem was succeeded by Caroline Hawley. In the January of 2006, Guerin was assigned to Africa and later to Islamabad, Pakistan.
Back in 2002, Guerin was honored with an honorary degree from the University of Essex. She has also won the prestigious Broadcaster of the Year award from the London Press Club. In 2005, Guerin received an MBE (honorary) for her dedicated service to journalism.
