Nancy Lynn Snyderman, who celebrates her birthday on the 26th of March, was born in 1952 in St. Louis, Missouri, United States as the daughter of Joy Snyderman and Sanford Snyderman, a physician.
She spent her childhood in Ft. Wayne, Indiana with her parents a younger brother, who is also currently working as a physician. She went to the South Side High School and graduated in 1970. Later for higher studies, Snyderman went to the Indiana University Bloomington and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in microbiology (B.A.). After that she received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the College of Medicine of University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1977.
In 2011, Snyderman disclosed the fact that she was once raped in college during her sophomore year. She stated that she “did everything wrong” by not coming forward and waiting too long. Because of this horrific incident, Snyderman feels strongly for the girls suffered at the hands of rapist and is always on the side of encouraging girls to come forward with the truth however tragic they may sound.
She married Doug and the couple, with their three beautiful children Kate, Rachel, and Charlie, currently lives in Princeton, New Jersey.
Career Inspiration
Since her father was a physician as well, she went with him to the hospital every Sunday and has wanted to become involved in the medicine profession from a very young age.
Snyderman mentioned father, mother, and the chief of surgery in Pittsburgh, Eugene Nicholas Myers as her mentors. She gives Myers all the credits for her skills to perform surgery.
Professional Life
Snyderman took on the medicinal career path as she trained at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pennsylvania with medical residencies in both pediatrics and otolaryngology. In 1983 she started to work among the surgical staff at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences as a specialist for neck cancers and throat.
Her broadcasting career began at KATV, an ABC affiliate in Little rock in 1984. There she worked as a correspondent for 15 whole years. She filled in as the substitute co-host on Good Morning America before leaving ABC News. At the Johnson & Johnson, she worked as the vice president of consumer education.
Snyderman shifted to San Francisco to practice head and neck surgery at the University of California San Francisco in 1988 and two years later, in 1990, she was hired by KPIX-TV as a medical correspondent in San Francisco.
NBC News hired Snyderman as their chief medical editor in the September of 2006. She regularly wrote reports on Today, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, Dateline NBC, MSNBC and MSNBC.com.
Her own website was launched in 2013 where she personally helped with medical queries of her viewers and wrote daily blogs. She became a member of the board of directors of the pharmaceutical company Alkermes in 2016.
Snyderman has also co-founded CarePlanners, a service that helps people to nagivate the healthcare system.
For her numerous contributions she has received many awards including many Emmy Awards, Edward R. Murrow Awards, an Alfred I. DuPont Award, and a Gracie Awards. She won the Associated Press Award for best documentary in 1987 and an award for in-depth reporting from KARK-TV. She was honored with the “Distinguished Service Award” in 1988. She has also received the Athena Awards and Trailblazer Awards.
