Personal Life
Moira Clare Ruby Stuart was born on the 2nd of September on 1949 in Royal Free Hospital, London, United Kingdom to Dominican-Bajan African-Caribbean parents, so she has quite the diverse set of genes.
Her parents divorced when she was just 10 years old. She was schooled at Our Lady’s Convent RC High School, Stamford Hill in London. Then she moved to Bermuda with her family when she was 13 and returned back to London after two years and finished her college studies.
Surprisingly, the 68-year-old has yet to marry although she had been involved in a relationship with Des Lynam and back in 2016, John Humphry had proposed her.
Professional Life
Stuart started her professional career as a production assistant manager on BBC radio’s Talks and Documentaries department during the 1970s. She also had been the news presenter for both BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 4. After 1981, Stuart shifted her career path towards television broadcasting.
BBC television hired her as a news presenter on every one of their bulletins from the 27th of August, 1981. She made appearances on The News Quiz and worked as a presenter on BBC’s Breakfast with Frost program, which was succeeded by Sunday AM. Later she also filled the role of presenter on BBC Breakfast.
After BBC shifted to a new studio, Stuart continued working in her position at BBC’s Sunday AM show and presented the news bulletins for BBC One. After decades of service, Stuart left Sunday AM in the April of 2007.
Since this was a major loss to the viewers, the press and colleagues of Stuart accused BBC of ageism and sexism. Still, BBC refused to give any comments on this topic. Nevertheless, there were still rumors that Stuart was fired because of her age and that 57 was considered to be “too old.”
After a service of 26 years at BBC Television, resulting in a total of 34 years of service to BBC radio and television, BBC announced Stuart’s departure in the October of 2007. But on 6th January, 2010, BBC News confirmed that Stuart would return to television again.
Social Media
Moira Stuart, despite being an irreplaceable personality in the history of television and radio broadcasting, hasn’t been involved very much with social networking sites.
The 68 year old had joined Twitter at @WestsideMoira on August 2010 and has only tweeted 1800 times, which is a very low number for a big media star such as her, until now. Still, she has managed to receive 9800 followings on her Twitter account.
