Thompson was born in the fashion center of the United States, New York City, New York. She spent her childhood in Europe where she received her basic education.
Thompson attended the International School of Brussels in Belgium, where she graduated her high school. After that, she returned to the United States and attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in American Studies (B.A.). In 2010, she was named to the Board of Trustees of the University of Notre Dame.
When it comes to her family and marital status, Thompson has remained very secretive and hasn’t disclosed any determining clues yet although there are a few rumors that she is already married.
Professional Life
Thompson’s career in journalism began as a general assignment reporter at WNDU-TV in South Bend, Indiana. Later she moved on to KSDK-TV, an NBC affiliate in Saint Louis, Missouri in 1983 and worked there for 3 years. She shifted to another NBC affiliate WDIV-TV in Detroit in 1986 after her job at Saint Louis. She served at WDIV-TV as their general assignment reporter for eleven whole years.
During her time at WDIV, Thompson was able to cover many major stories including the Jessica JeBoer custody battle, a profile of Kirk Kerkorian and his attempted takeover of Chrysler. For such works, she has been honored with seven Emmy Awards.
In 1997, Thompson was hired by NBC as the Network’s National Correspondent who was responsible for reporting numerous varieties of stories including the Daimler Benz’ takeover of Chrysler and the death of John F. Kennedy Jr.
She was promoted to Chief Financial Correspondent in the March of 2005 and started covering economic stories such as the impact of Hurricane Katrina on the country’s economy and Martha Steward trials. She became the lead correspondent for NBC News in 2000 and was handed responsibility to cover the presidential campaigns of Democratic Senator Bill Bradley and Republic Senator John McCain.
Her position shifted to the environmental sector as she became NBC’s Chief Environmental Correspondent in the April of 2007. Since then, she has covered many major historical events on NBC’s news platforms like NBC Nightly News, Today, MSNBC and NBCNews.com.
