Born on 3rd February 1965 in Hyde Park, Boston MA, Tierney has been active as an actress since 1987. She is 5.2 feet in height and 50 years of age. Raised into an Irish Catholic family with two other younger siblings, she attended Notre Dame Academy studying drama that led to her appearance at the Boston Globe Drama Festival. Upon her graduation from Notre Dame, she attended New York University majoring in dance and drama.
Tierney moved to Los Angeles, California and had her major break in Disney's film Student Exchange (1987). A low-budget indie film Dead Women in Lingerie had her starring, but was never released theatrically except for a DVD release in 2005. With over 30 films (out of which four were TV movies) and 15 TV series to her credit, Tierney can be seen as a versatile actress playing different roles ranging from a housewife to a certified doctor.

In 2009, Tierney left her role in Parenthood despite being cast due to conflicts in her cancer treatments following a surgery to remove a tumour from her breast. She prefers to call herself a champion and not survivor, having also signed on to the Chemotherapy : Myths or Facts Campaign soon after that to debunk popular myths on cancer and fighting this fatal disease. She later returned to work in a stage play after finishing her treatment in 2010.
After meeting on the sets of a TV series that never got released, Tierney married to actor-director Billy Morrissette on 1st February 1993. The couple shared 13 years of married life that ended in divorce and no children, due to differences that couldn't be sorted out.
