Mary Murphy who is a Ballroom Dance Champion, dance judge, as well as the choreographer was born on 9th March 1958. She is the judge and a choreographer on Fox Dance reality show called “So You Think You Can Dance”. She is the native of Lancaster, Ohio, United States. As a child, she was named as Mary Ann Murphy. She attended Northwest High School located in Canal Fulton, Ohio from where she got graduated. She then went on to join the Ohio University and after graduating from there with the degree in the physical education as well as minor in the modern dance, she moved to the Washington, D.C. got starting her career. Mary then answered the newspaper advertisement for the studio instructor trainees. After only a week, she became an instructor and she was invited by the studio owner for attending United States Ballroom Championship in the New York City. That was an event which influenced her for committing a career in ballroom dancing.

She then moved to California and began to search for dance partner while she was working as an instructor. She met Stiglitz during UK Open Championships in the England and her dancing partner was formed. The duo began to participate as well as they also became 1990 and 1991 Austrian National Champions. It was in the year 1990 when Mary opened Champion Ballroom Academy in San Diego. In addition to that, she acted for dance double for Julia Roberts in movie called Something To Talk About and she also appeared in Dance with Me starring Vanessa L. Williams. She also made her appearance as worker at the casino wedding chapel in 2010 movie titled Degrassi Takes Manhattan.

Mary first joined the “So You Can Dance” that airs on the Fox as a ballroom choreographer and a guest judge in the year 2005. At beginning of third season, Murphy became its second permanent judge. Later, she left as a permanent judge in the seventh season of the show, partly to get recover from the throat cancer. But, Mary again returned to the show in following season. Besides that, she also made her guest appearance on the international versions of “So You Think You Can Dance” also including “So You Think You Can Dance Australia”, So You Think You Can Dance Scandinavia” and “So You Think You Can Dance Canada”. Currently, she is running her dance studio as well as organizes Los Angeles dance competition The Hollywood Dancesport Championships. She also serves as judge in several of the competitions which includes US National Ballroom Championships.

In addition to that, she also headlined Broadway ballroom dance show called Burn The Floor from 22nd December 2009 till 10th January 2010. During that time, she was partnered with Vaides Skimelis. She then again returned to touring cast of Burn the Floor on September and October of the year 2010 with the performances in San Jose and San Diego. At that time also, she was partnered with Vaidas Skimelis.

To talk about her personal life, Murphy is a married woman. She has married three times. She has revealed that at the time of her first marriage that lasted 9 years, she was the victim of the domestic abuse. She stated on the Larry King Show on October of 2010 that she was at last speaking out, so that other victims could get a lesson how she endured but escaped from domestic violence. But her first husband denied that he abused her physically and mentally.  She got divorced with her third husband in 2008 who is named Phillip Gott but her remains the employee of her ballroom dance academy. Mary announced on 28th May 2011 that she made the amends with her 2nd husband in final days of battling the cancer.

Apart from that, Murphy is now at the age of 56 and she stands tall at the height of five feet and nine inches. Mary announced on 22nd February 2011 that, she was free of the Thyroid Cancer after she underwent the surgery in December of 2010 for removing a tumor from her thyroid. Besides, she has also won numbers of awards for her work.
