Ken Cuccinelli was born on July 30, 1968, in Edison, New Jersey. His mother belongs to an Irish ancestry whereas his father was of Italian descent. He belongs to the Republican political party and is a Roman Catholic by faith. Cuccinelli completed his high school from Gonzaga College High School. After graduating in 1986, he attended the University of Virginia from where he received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Cuccinelli married the love of his life Teiro Davis, whom he met in his neighborhood. He fell in love with Teiro when he saw her in the high school that he even took her to the prom. Career and Professional Life
Cuccinelli started his political career by running for the Virginia Senate Special Election which was held in August 2002. He narrowly escaped winning the 2007 re-election after Democrat Janet Oleszek lead by a 0.3-point margin. As a Senate, he took the conventional position on illegal immigration, abortion, taxes, property rights and gay marriage. He also ordered to increase care for mentally disabled one.
In 2009, Cuccinelli stands as the Republican nominee for attorney general. On January 16, 2010, he was launched as an Attorney General of Virginia after winning 58% of the vote. He raised a massive $100,000 from his inauguration ceremony and donated it to the nonprofit Richmond, which supplies medical health services to the homeless. In the same year, he filed a case during the constitutionality of the Federal Health Care bill passed on March 21 in US district court. However, the Supreme Court has declined Cuccinelli appeal.
Apart from healthcare, Cuccinelli has also worked for the Immigration and Gay rights non-discrimination policy. He united with eight states to sort out the issue of Arizona immigration enforcement statute on July 14, 2010. Similarly, he made an official statement to the president and other political leaders where he expressed his opinion on gay rights on March 4, 2010.
On February 16, 2010, Cuccinelli filed an appeal to the United States Environmental Protection Agency against the harmful gases that endanger public health. To further add, he announced to challenge March 2010 standards for motor vehicle fuel efficiency on April 1, 2010. He also served a civil investigative demand on University of Virginia in April 2010.
Bobby Thompson, US Navy Veterans Association director contributed a $55,500 for Cuccinelli campaign. Later on a report of St. Petersburg Times questioned on his loyalty, he was accused of misusing the funds that he received from the veteran organizations. However, Cuccinelli spokesperson claimed that he hadn’t involved in any wrongdoing. Following the controversy, he donated $55,000 to Virginia’s veterans charities.
In May 2010, he used the chronological state seal which displays Virtus, the Roman goddess of courage and gifted it to one of his office staff. In 2010, Cuccinelli made an official announcement to launch a brand new level of expert advocacy to the Attorney General’s office. He further added that the veterans will be provided a job in Virginia and also work on the issues like Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that affect veterans. He also joined the 32 other states attorney general for the investigation and resolution of a court case related to the overcharges for the chips to the consumers and government purchasers. The case was filed in the court in 2006.
Cuccinelli expressed his legal opinion that concerned authorities like teachers, school administrators and police should look after the student cell phones on the sensible conjecture to detect sexting and cyber bullying on November 24, 2010. However, Rutherford Institute and ACLU disagreed with his opinion.
In March 2013, Cuccinelli was once again on the news for his role in tax dispute case. Reacting to the news, he disclosed $18,000 in gifts from Jonnie R. Williams, star’s chief executive. He also revealed an additional gift of worth $4,500 from R. Williams, including R. Williams Smith Mountain Lake lodge that he used free of cost in 2010 and 2012. He counters attack Commonwealth’s attorney by challenging him to disclose his filings.
During his authority, Cuccinelli has been a stalwart advocate who worked against human trafficking. He also slammed some of the popular media for displaying prostitution as a career path. To support the cause, he worked as a full-time staff in the office to prosecute human trafficking.
As attorney general, he appointed Thomas Haynesworth as a clerk in his office. Before that, he had a heated argument in the court for the exoneration of Haynesworth, who served 27 years in prison. Haynesworth reacted to the incident by saying that he was an extraordinary guy who put his title on the line for me.
After being elected as attorney general, it was rumored that he is the possible candidate for the 2013 election governor or for US senate in 2014. On November 30, 2011, a report in The Washington Post claimed that Cuccinelli will announce his run for the 2013 governor in few days. After one day of the news, he confirmed that he would run. On November 5, 2013, he lost his gubernatorial election bid to Terry McAuliffe.
Cuccinelli worked as an advisor to Ted Cruz’s 2016 presidential election campaign. Even though Cuccinelli was leading in the early polls in the 2017 gubernatorial race for the Republican nomination, in April 2016, he announced that he would no longer be running for 2017 governor. He was also named Freedom Works general counsel in May 2016.
