O'Donnell has Irish ancestry, as her grandparents from both maternal and paternal sides were immigrants from Ireland. She is an alma mater of Northwestern University's School of Education and Social Policy (SESP). Back in the 90's, O'Donnell worked as an anchor and reporter in Cleveland, Ohio for WJW TV which was then one of CBS stations in the area.
