Playing youth categories for Slovenian team Zlatorg Lasko in 2012 he was loaned to Union Olimpija to play Nike International Junior Tournament. Nurkic attracted attention internationally averaging 18.8 points and 11 rebounds over 5 games. After the tournament, he started training with Croatian team Cedevita and said his goodbyes to Zlatorg Lasko.
He signed a 4 years contract with Cedevita. Despite blaming coach Milos Sporar not giving him chance to play being the reason he parted ways with Zlatorg Lasko, in the press conference, he started with a small role in the team under head coach Aleksandar Petrovic. In euro league, he played only 6 games averaging 1.8 points per game. Hoping to play more minutes he was loaned in January 2013 to Zadar on his own initiative.
