Born on San Jose in Costa Rica, Joel Nathaniel Campbell Samuels, known popularly as Joel Campbell is a footballer playing for Arsenal and Costa Rican national team. With a height of 5 feet 10 inches, Joel plays in forward and winger positions. His bio is discussed below.
Joel was born on the 26th of June 1992 and is 23 years of age. A staunch believer in God whom he regards as the 2nd pillar in life after family, Joel is currently in a relationship with Maria Fernanda Cascante.
Beginning his soccer club career in 2009 with Deportivo Saprissa S.A.D, Joel also loaned to Puntarenas in 2011. Amidst speculations among the Costa Rican media that Joel had agreed to play for Arsenal having declined offers from Sevilla and Fiorentina, Joel did finally sign for the team on 19th of August 2011 only to be offset by his failure to obtain a work permit.
Meanwhile, he spent the first three seasons playing for Lorient. Real Betis and Olympiacos out on loan. He would get the required permit two years later and make his debut the same time that the club won the FA Community Shield in 2014. With a brief stint at Villareal on loan transfer, he returned to Arsenal in 2015 to find that a few prominent strikers were down with injury for the Premier League. Here, he went on to score his first goal for the club in 2015.
Joel has also played for the Costa Rican national squads since 2009 where he was chosen for the CONCACAF under-17 Championship. The CONCACAF under-20 Championship 2011 saw him vie for the top scorer spot with six goal. The very same year he was called in to play for the national team in a strange way : having spotted playing soccer with cans on the streets of San Jose' and thus impressing the national team manager Ricardo La Volpe. Joel went on to play the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2011 when Costa Rica defeated Cuba 5-0, but lost to Honduras 4-2 in the penalty shootouts. Joel also represented Costa Rica in the 2011 Copa Ame'rica held in Argentina only to be eliminated upon reaching the third position in the group.
In 2013, Joel was reprimanded by FIFA for his unsportsmanship, the reason being this : Joel's off-the-ball dive against USA's Matt Besler resulted in Besler's suspension. The video footages that emerged brought up questions doubting the quality of refereeing as well as any post-match disciplinary actions. While earlier it was thought that FIFA's investigation had brought no results, Joel was later officially punished over this incident.
Joel's first goal for Costa Rica against Uruguay in the FIFA World Cup 2014 ended in a 3-1 victory for Costa Rica. Later, Greece suffered defeat at the hands of Costa Rica during the round of 16, when Joel was one among the five goal scorers in a penalty shootout : the final score being 5-3.
Joel contract to Arsenal was signed with a deal of $6.9 million from 2012 till 2016. With a net worth reportedly around $8.5 million, Joel's salary is reported to be $2.8 million (in 2015). So far, Joel is the only player in the Arsenal and Costa Rica national team not to have succumbed to any serious injury.
