James Smith Dashner, born on 26th November 1972 in Austell, Georgia, was raised as a mormon along with his 5 siblings. The passion for expressing thoughts into words stirred up in him at an early age. When he was 10 years old, he would type on his parent’s typewriter.
He went to Duluth High School and graduated in 1991. Later he had to leave his home Georgia, and shift to Provo, Utah to study at Brigham Young University. He graduated from college by earning a Master’s degree in Accounting.
Dashner tied the knot with Lynette Anderson, a former student at Brigham Young University. The couple has been blessed with four children and the family is currently residing in Utah.
Professional Life
James Dashner, after graduating from college, decided to give it a shot at writing. He had always loved reading novels and writing his own stories since childhood. But success doesn’t come easy.
After a lot of all-nighters and failed attempts, He came up with the character of Jimmy Fincher. Then all he needed to do was put his character’s story into an outline, which he eventually did. Collectively known as The Jimmy Fincher Saga today, Dasher was able to write four sequels of novel for the character that he had created.
Initially, publishers hesitated and turned down Dashner but when his Cedar Fort saw the potential in him by taking a look at his manuscript, his career as an author began.After his four part Fishner series, he wrote another world wide selling trilogy, The Maze Runner.
While the plot of the story was compared with that of The Hunger Games, the reviews were generally positive. Later he added a prequel to the trilogy, The Kill Order, which according to him, is heavily influenced by William Golding’s The Lord of the Files and Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game.
After The Maze Runner series, he wrote the two-part series The Infinity Ring series and another four-part series The Mortality Doctrine which were equally loved. His books mostly attract a young audience since the protagonists in his books are mostly young men faced with perilous situations.
He was awarded the Whitney Award for Best Youth Fiction, ALA Best Fiction for Young Adults, and Young Reader’s Choice Award.
