Payet started his football career through the local club AS Saint-Philippe in his home town, and three years later, he moved to JS Saint-Pierroise for a year. He signed and played for Le Havre in France until 2003, quitting after he had a hard time being accused of unmotivated character. He returned to his home town to sign with AS Excelsior for one and a ½ year and played in the Reunion Premier League. He then signed to Nantes in mainland France for two years and proved himself as one of the best players on the reserve team by scoring 6 goals in 22 appearances of the 2005-2006 seasons, and this led to his entry into the senior team where he made his professional debut on the 19th of December, 2005.
He was signed into the senior team of Nantes before the 2006-2007 season, where his performance had been good despite Nantes relegation to second division for the first time in 1963; and expressing his desire to play in first division teams led him to sign with Saint-Etienne Saint Etienne on a four year contract and was featured for the first time in the UEFA cup in the year 2008-2009.
Appearing in 30 games with 4 goals and 6 assists to his credit that season, and extending his contract until 2013, Payet consistently performed well in the 2009-2010 season appearing in 35 games, scoring 2 goals and 6 assists. Payet's 2010-2011 season began with 7 goals in 2 months, followed in later games by a hatrick, a double scorer and a free-kick goal that led to him being awarded the UNFP Player of the Month in 2010. Moving to Lille on 2011 for a four year contract, Payet didn't stay there for long: he signed to Olympique de Marseille in 2013 for a contract fee of 11 million euro, his stint with this team being exceptional in the final season of 2014-2015 with 36 appearances, 17 assists and most number of through balls less only to Lionel Messi.
His present club West Ham United signed Payet for an undisclosed amount for a 5 year deal (with 12 months extra in option). His premier League debut on 9th of August 2015 resulted in a Score of 2-0 win against Arsenal, and his first goal came in a defeat match against Leicester City. An ankle injury in November in a game against Everton has sidelined Payet for estimated 3 months of recovery.
