The couple became very close as dancing partners, so they moved to Houston, Texas in the US. There is an interesting story regarding the naming of their only son, Mark Ballas. Before Mark was born, both Corky and Shirley expected the child to be a girl and had even thought of naming the baby girl as Amy. However, Mark, a boy was born instead. Later, Mark would take that name to name his rock band as Almost Amy.
