Who doesn't remember the majestic dance sequences of the critically acclaimed movie Black Swan? Regular cinema goers who have watched the movie will know that it's more of piece of art, than a regular movie. Natalie Portman's portrayal of the semi-dark character in the movie had everyone in for a surprise, but so did her husband Benjamin Millepied's artistic inputs for the movie in all its sublimity. This bio is an effort to know about Benjamin Millepied's life and career, in brief.Raised in Dakar, Senegal, Benjamin Millipied was born on 10th June 1977 in Bordeaux, France as the youngest of 3 sons. His mother, Catherine Flori who herself was a former ballet dancer, started to train him in ballet dancing at the tender age of 8. He then went on to study with Michel Rahn and Marie France Dieulevin at the Conservatoire National in Lyon, France from between the age of 13 and 16.
He then moved to New York City to attend the summer program at the School of American Ballet, and became a full-time student a year later at the school studying under Stanley Williams and Adam Luders upon receiving the Bourse Lavoisier scholarship award from the French Ministry. In 1994 Millepied received the Prix de Lausanne award, and in his final year at the School of American Ballet he received the Mae L. Wien Award for Outstanding Promise. After being invited to be a member of the New York City Ballet, the mother organisation of his alma mater, he was promoted in 2001 to the rank of Principal Dancer and remained in the position until his retirement in 2011. He started choreographing in 2001, and founded a dance company in 2002 called Danses Concertantes, a touring dance company that travelled all across the world to perform in prestigious venues gathering different dancers for each tour. He then went on to work as the choreographer-in-residence at the Baryshnikov Arts Center from 2006 to 2007, and also received the United States Artists Wynn Fellowship in 2007. He would go on to establish 2 more dance companies in the following years, notably in collaboration with various other established artists that use mediums distinct to dance : L.A. Dance Project (2012), Amoveo Company (2013). The year 2013 saw Millepied being appointed by the Paris Opera Ballet as it's new Director.
Millepied's wife is Natalie Portman, the famed actress whom he met in 2009, while both these were on the sets of Black Swan. Millipied left Isabella Boylston, his girlfriend at the time to start this relationship with Portman. The couple were married in August 2012, but not before they had their first child, a son named Aleph Portman-Millepied. Millepied was made Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture in 2010, and has said in 2014 that he was on the process of converting to Judaism.
